LERC Issues Large Micro Utility Distribution License to LIBENERGY

The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has issued a Large Micro Utility Distribution License to LIBENERGY for the distribution of electricity without discrimination to customers within River Gee, Grand Gedeh, Maryland and parts of Nimba Counties.

The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners (BoC) Dr. Lawrence D. Sekajipo said the licensing was preceded by a rigorous scrutiny that included the conduct of three separate public hearings in September 2023 in the three counties.

Dr. Sekajipo speaking on Thursday 7^th December 2023 at the ceremony said the Commission was now issued its second Large Micro Utility Distribution License to LIBENERY in accordance with the 2015 Electricity Law of Liberia (ELL). The Large Micro Utility Distribution License issued LIBENERGY is valid for five-years.

Cllr. Michael Korkpor who is a member of the BoC, cautioned LIBENERY to abide by the license terms and conditions and pinpointed that the Commissioner will use the terms and conditions to monitor the energy company operations in their assigned distribution area.

Responding, the CEO of LIBENERY Mr. Maissa Diagne averred obtaining this license demonstrates LIBENERY commitment to the safety, sustainability, and modernization of the electricity network. “We have invested in cutting-edge technologies, in the continuous training of our teams and in operational practices that meet the highest standards in the sector. This license is not just a certificate on paper, but tangible recognition of our commitment to operational excellence.”

Mr. Diagne said the company have started and almost completed a major vegetation clearing campaign to guarantee the reliability of the entire electricity network in the different counties. In addition, we have replaced several transformers that have been damaged for years, as well as damaged poles, from the first months of taking charge of operations.

Monie Captan, Chairman of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) Board, hailed the Commission and described the certification as a significant milestone in the energy sector in Liberia.

The ceremony was graced by the Superintendents from Maryland, River Gee and Grand Gedeh counties, Ministry of Mines and Energy, LEC and among others.
